Primary School - Nepal
Supporting the reconstruction of Sikdel School in Nepal affected by the 2015 earthquakes that hit the country
The KILROY Foundation and KILROY Group proudly supports the reconstruction of Sikdel School – an education facility in Kavre district outside the nation's capital of Kathmandu and run by The Green Lion.
On April 25th 2015, one of two tragic earthquakes shook the nation, displacing and injuring thousands of people. Many felt the immediate need to contribute and care for the Nepalese people - and so with the help of the KILROY Foundation and those working in the KILROY Group, a donation initiative was established.
On October 22nd 2015, KILROY Foundation made a donation to The Green Lion organization where all proceeds will help with reconstruction of Sikdel School.
The school suffered destroyed classrooms, play areas, bathing & toilet facilities and living accommodations due to the extent of a second earthquake that hit the country only weeks after the first.
The age group of students at the school range from 1 to 12 years old and class levels start from primary school and go until the 5th grade. Once reconstruction of the school is complete, it will accommodate 80 students, 4 teachers and 1 assistant.
Volunteers from 18 different countries like Australia, Sweden, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Papua, and France have come together as they begin to knock down walls, manage debris and begin reconstruction of the school that will take place from November.
Due to dangerous road conditions caused by the earthquakes, the journey from Kathmandu to Sikdel School is a precocious 6-hour drive and 30-minute trek - posing as a challenge for The Green Lion staff and volunteers in getting sufficient aid and building materials to the school.
Nevertheless, due to generous donations made, The Green Lion will be able to purchase sand, cement, metal roofing, stone, brick, doors and window frames, wood and tools in order to rebuild 7 new classrooms for the schools students.
